"Any idea when you're interviewing the band?" a message arrives. "My request was to ask if I can become their extra sister."

There is only a key snag: The author likewise longs to be the Haims' newest recruit. Furthermore, we are far from alone. Multiple famous admirers have publicly begged for the role.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is happening. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana launched their musical journey doing sets at small eateries with their family. Presently, they stand as multiple Grammy nominees.

Like all the most iconic ensembles, they're a tight-knit unit. Their music videos repeatedly feature them striding in sync down the avenues of Los Angeles. On stage, they jam with such unfettered joy you can't help but think, "I'd love to be involved in that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that fans came up to us and said, 'Watching you live, I picked up a drum kit'," states Alana, the youngest of the sisters. "It is the greatest honor. That is recognition in itself. We have succeeded if we can motivate young girls to form a group."

"Therefore all is invited to be the fourth Haim sister."

Award Recognition

The trio are connecting from a break, where they're taking a pause after an lengthy tour in support of their new album, I Quit.

They're currently processing the news it's been nominated for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first female band ever in contention for the trophy.

"I watch the nominations every year, so it kind of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," notes Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The significance of the nomination resonates with the sisters.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major step," says Alana. "But we're just grateful for the female artists that inspired us."

Emotional Upheaval and Laughter

The record was born from a phase of personal change. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that unique in-between place where you're relieved to be free, but not entirely ready to move on.

The lyrics track breakups and partings. The sisters want love, but not the specific love they've got. You can hear them determining in the moment who they aspire to be.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is like a personal statement. You have to consciously practice shutting out the noise and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Refinement of Style

That recent toughness required a new sound – more unpolished and direct than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that began with the drum sound.

"Drums are such a detailed thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our book," quips Alana. "I always say, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Stories and Collective Camaraderie

The band's honesty inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters revealed some of their dating misadventures.

A former partner ended things with Este over a medical concern. Alana recalled a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"During these breakups, you just feel like there's no hope," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to find humor in those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's incredible."

A Confident Future

You can clearly sense a shift in the band. Today, Haim are more confident of their place in the industry.

They're major draws, with successful albums and an global following.

But Haim will consistently be their number one focus.

"We have been performing since I was a young child," concludes Alana. "It's like no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
