Finest Small Screen Picks: 7 Essential Films In the Days Ahead

Pick of the Week

The Substance Film

Coralie Fargeat's unflinching critique examines the demanding standards for women's appearance as well as the perceived horrors of ageing. Demi Moore presents a masterful portrayal playing Elisabeth, a 50-year-old film star reduced to presenting a fitness program on TV. Forced aside due to her unscrupulous employer Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she turns to a secretive and gruesome process known as "The Substance". This generates a younger clone called Sue, resulting in a steadily more toxic connection between the two. This Friday, Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10 Film

This classic whodunit story stars the talented actress playing Laura, a top-notch writer who decides to take a hiatus from writing about world issues to board a luxury cruise alongside a terminally ill Norwegian shipping heiress and donor, her partner, as well as other filthy rich guests. However when an unknown lady falls into the sea one night and the entire crew claims she was never there, the reporter's sleuthing skills awaken. Out now, Netflix

Presence Film

Soderbergh challenges his film-making abilities through this clever paranormal narrative filmed completely from the viewpoint of the phantom. When a household featuring mother Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe moves into their new suburban house, the filming device – representing the ghost – follows them around. Chloe seems sensing the supernatural presence, and the entity appears protective of her. However, the motive remains? The premise is enjoyable that remains concise, including a revelation that could catch you off guard. October 11th, 4.35pm, 10.10pm, the Sky channel

This Self-Referential Film

Cage wholeheartedly adopts his unique fame in this autobiographical spoof. He portrays a self-obsessed Hollywood actor called Nicolas Cage who takes on a $1m payday to attend a celebration on the Spanish island for the wealthy Javi, played by Pedro Pascal. Hired by the intelligence agency to spy on the alleged criminal, the actor's unconventional method is put to the test. October 11th, 9pm, the Channel 4 network

The Black Phone Horror

Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller remains effective even without a sequel. Located in the late 70s in Denver, a series of kidnappings has left the local kids frightened. Once Finney is kidnapped by the kidnapper and held captive in a dungeon, he fears a terrible outcome. However, the disconnected phone in the room continues to ring, with eerie communicators providing assistance, while the prophetic visions of his sister Gwen could save him. A genuinely scary movie. Saturday 11 October, nighttime, Film4

The Eyes of Tammy Faye

In the conflict between God and Mammon, the victory is clear for materialism in Michael Showalter's wonderfully garish film adaptation about the fallen religious broadcaster and her felon spouse. Andrew Garfield acts as the venal Jim, who declares early on, claiming divine approval for wealth. Both individuals begin capitalizing on the people's religious faith. It's an extravaganza of poor styling, excessive cosmetics and hypocrisy, though Jessica Chastain succeeds to show the real-life figure as a sympathetic figure. Tuesday 14 October, early morning, on Film4

This Espionage Thriller

This week's additional entry from Steven Soderbergh presents a espionage tale as tight like the turtlenecks sported by Michael Fassbender's British agent. He receives a mission with uncovering a traitor among the team from five suspects – among them is Kathryn, played by Cate Blanchett. Both actors are masters of deadpan cool, leading to a delightful psychological game of truth or lie develops. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela join in the smart espionage amusement. Friday 17 October, 8.05am, 12.55pm, 8pm, Sky Cinema
